AI has become integral to daily life for many individuals in the UK. A recent study by IBM indicates that 74% of respondents in the UK and Ireland are comfortable using AI-powered assistants for decision-making, including financial choices and personal recommendations.

Among those surveyed, 48% expressed trust in AI assistants for enrolling in paid services. Approximately 57% are comfortable with AI making daily decisions, and 62% welcome AI's assistance in providing personalized advice. The study, conducted by Censuswide, included feedback from 2,257 adults aware of their interactions with AI.

Trust in AI is increasing, as IBM reports that 79% of respondents trust interactive AI tools, such as chatbots, to deliver reliable results. Additionally, 72% enjoy using AI in their daily lives, indicating a growing openness to integrating machines into everyday decision-making.

AI is widely used across various industries as part of weekly routines. According to IBM’s research:

55% of consumers utilize AI in retail 48% in entertainment 43% in finance 42% in customer service 32% in government services

Confidence in AI is also reflected by the 46% of people who are willing to make important decisions based on AI-generated information. This trust is notably strong in sectors where users seek quick information or assistance, such as shopping or banking. Businesses in these areas can benefit from expedited services and improved customer retention.

Despite growing confidence in AI, security and privacy remain priorities. Approximately 63% of participants emphasize the importance of transparency and control over AI decision-making, while 44% remain cautious about the privacy risks associated with AI data sharing.

The study also explored features that would encourage frequent AI service usage. Convenience and speed were noted by 40%, data security and privacy by 37%, and 24-hour customer support by 35%.

Businesses can enhance trust by developing secure systems and maintaining transparency about AI operations. Improvements such as smarter fraud detection, stronger privacy measures, and reliable chat tools are desired enhancements.

Younger individuals are more comfortable using AI. Among millennials, 65% believe AI benefits society, compared to only 32% of individuals aged 55 and older. Regional trends show high usage of virtual assistants in the North of England (85%) and the Midlands (84%).

In the West Midlands, 65% trust AI-powered retail services, exceeding the national average by over 10%. In London, 63% trust AI information, 21% higher than the UK and Ireland average. In Manchester, half of the respondents already use AI for everyday tasks.

The IBM study highlights that increasing public trust in AI is creating opportunities for new business models in the UK. Various industries stand to benefit from AI-powered tools to assist customers. Companies are transitioning from standard chatbots to advanced AI agents.

Organizations prioritizing privacy and transparency in AI systems are well-positioned to attract new customers. Users are more likely to engage with AI if their data is securely handled, and decision-making processes are clearly explained.

Leon Butler, Chief Executive of IBM UK and Ireland, stated: "Our study shows that users are quickly acclimating to AI assistants. AI is increasingly shaping how we live, work, shop, and innovate, presenting a prime opportunity for UKI enterprises to scale agentic AI for customer-led growth."

Neil Ward-Dutton, VP AI, Automation, Data & Analytics Europe, IDC, noted: "While public confidence in AI is significant, businesses must implement secure and reliable AI systems at scale to capitalize on these opportunities."
