Zuma is facing 18 charges, including corruption, fraud, and money laundering, related to allegations of receiving over 700 illegal payments connected to a 1999 arms deal. He denies all accusations, describing the case as politically motivated.
The corruption trial has been ongoing for nearly 20 years, frequently delayed by appeals and legal challenges from both Zuma and Thales. Prosecutors informed Judge Nkosinathi Chili that these actions have postponed the case for 18 years, and all prior attempts to hinder the trial have been dismissed.
Zuma's legal team is questioning the impartiality of lead prosecutor Billy Downer and argues that the deaths of two key Thales executives have compromised their defense capabilities.

In addition to this case, Zuma faces other legal issues. In 2021, he was jailed for contempt of court after refusing to testify before the Zondo Commission, although he was later granted early release following a commutation of his sentence.
Further, Zuma is contesting a ruling that mandates him to repay $1.6 million in state-funded legal fees spent on his corruption defense. He is appealing this decision, asserting that he is not liable for repayment.
The court is anticipated to rule on whether Zuma and Thales can continue their appeals or must proceed to trial.
