The 18-year-old has found himself under intense scrutiny following a series of visible displays of frustration, including a refusal to celebrate during a critical league victory.

The controversy peaked during Saturday’s 2-1 La Liga win over Atletico, which pushed Barcelona seven points clear at the summit of the table. Despite the victory, Yamal appeared visibly irritated and chose not to join his teammates in celebrating the late winner. Reports from Spanish media suggest the teenager was reacting to a member of the coaching staff who criticized him mid-match for opting to shoot rather than pass.

"He is Only 18"

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Flick was firm in his support of the Spain international, who has also shown dissatisfaction when substituted in previous matches.

"What we have to see is that Lamine is 18 years old. For me, he’s an unbelievable player—what he’s doing is unbelievable," Flick said. "But he’s only 18. Sometimes he’s angry when I substitute him, or he’s frustrated he didn't score after dribbling past four or five players. He’s emotional, and this is good. I will always support him."

While Flick acknowledged that Yamal’s reactions sometimes create unnecessary "noise" around the squad, he emphasized that the club’s priority is nurturing his growth. "Not everything he is doing is good for the team's image, but everyone makes mistakes. I told him: 'No problem, I will always protect you.' He has the potential to be one of the best, maybe the best player in the future."

Champions League Stakes

The Catalans are set to face Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid again on Wednesday, this time for the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal at Camp Nou. Flick warned that the midweek fixture would be a different challenge from Saturday's league win.

"Atleti is a tough team with the right attitude and a lot of intensity," Flick noted. "They love to defend in a deep block, and it’s never easy to score against them. There will be a lot of emotions across these two legs."

Squad Rotations and Rashford's Role

Barcelona will be without Raphinha due to injury, likely handing a start to Marcus Rashford on the left flank. Rashford, currently on loan from Manchester United, earned praise from Flick after scoring against Atletico over the weekend, though the manager stressed the need for the Englishman to improve his defensive contributions.

"Pressing is a vital part of our game," Flick explained. "Everyone knows he is fantastic one-on-one with the ball, but defending is also part of football. He has adapted a lot, and we need him to help his teammates on the flank."

Flick remained non-committal regarding whether Barcelona intends to exercise the purchase option for Rashford at the end of the season.
