His passing comes just days after he stepped down from his second stint as the manager of the Romanian national team, having fallen ill during a training session.
In a statement, the hospital described Lucescu as a "national symbol," noting that he was the first coach to lead Romania to a European Championship in 1984. "Entire generations of Romanians grew up with his image in their hearts," the statement read.

Born in Bucharest on July 29, 1945, Lucescu’s influence on the sport spanned nearly five decades. As a player, he was a commanding presence, famously captaining the Romanian national side during the 1970 World Cup.
However, it was his tactical brilliance from the touchline that earned him global acclaim. His coaching career took him across Europe, including notable spells in Italy with Inter Milan, Brescia, Pisa, and Reggiana. At Brescia, he famously created the "Brescia Romeno" era by signing four of his compatriots, including the iconic Gheorghe Hagi.

Lucescu’s final match as a coach took place on March 26, 2026, during Romania's World Cup qualifying playoff against Turkiye. While the team narrowly missed out on qualification, Lucescu’s status as a titan of the game remains undisputed.
