Union Demands ICE-Free Zone and Job Protections Ahead of 2026 Tournament
As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, tensions are rising at the Los Angeles Stadium (traditionally known as SoFi Stadium). A labor union representing approximately 2,000 food service workers has issued a formal request to FIFA, demanding that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents be barred from the venue during tournament operations.
The union, Unite Here Local 11, which represents a diverse workforce of cooks, bartenders, and servers, warned that workers are prepared to strike if their safety and labor concerns are not addressed.
Security vs. Sovereignty
The friction stems from statements made by the acting director of ICE, Todd Lyons, who indicated that the agency would play a "key part" in the World Cup's security apparatus. The union argues that a visible ICE presence would create a climate of fear, threatening the safety of both immigrant workers and international guests.
"FIFA and its corporate sponsors will pocket billions from Los Angeles while refusing to even acknowledge the cooks, servers, and stand attendants who make this event possible," said Kurt Petersen, co-president of Local 11.

Beyond the exclusion of federal immigration agents and Border Patrol, the union has laid out a comprehensive list of requirements for FIFA and stadium owner Kroenke Sports & Entertainment:

- Job Security: Guarantees that hospitality jobs will be protected from replacement by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation during the tournament.
- Community Support: Contributions to affordable housing funds for hospitality workers and protections for immigrant families facing rising costs in Inglewood.
Tournament Logistics and Local Impact
The Los Angeles Stadium is scheduled to host eight high-profile matches, beginning with a clash between the United States and Paraguay on June 12, 2026. Despite the approaching deadline, the union reports that workers remain without a labor contract.
Local 11 has also highlighted the broader economic impact of the event, calling for restrictions on short-term rentals and new tax measures to mitigate the housing crisis exacerbated by major sporting events.
While the venue remains one of the world's most modern sports facilities, the looming threat of a strike poses a significant logistical challenge for FIFA as it prepares for its first 48-team tournament across North America. Progress remains stalled, as the union claims FIFA has repeatedly ignored requests for direct negotiations since Los Angeles was selected as a host city.
