Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting has secured a bronze medal at the Asian Boxing Elite Championships in Mongolia, marking her first return to competitive action since her gold-medal victory at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The 30-year-old athlete, who rose to global prominence after a gold-medal run in the 57kg category, moved up to the 60kg division for this tournament. Her campaign ended in the semifinals on Monday following a defeat to North Korea’s Won Un Gyong, earning her the bronze.
A Period of Observation and Adjustment
Lin’s coach, Tseng Tzu-chiang, viewed the tournament as a critical learning phase for the champion as she adjusts to a heavier weight class.
"After all, this is our first time competing in the 60kg division after the Olympics," Tseng told Taiwan’s Central News Agency. "The opponents’ skills, strategies, and styles are all new to us, so we used this opportunity to observe and learn."

Tseng candidly addressed Lin's performance, noting that her prolonged absence from the ring impacted her readiness. "Yu-ting hasn’t competed in a long time, and it was evident that her physical condition wasn’t quite up to par," he added. "Losing this time isn’t a bad thing; at least there’s room for improvement and a clear path forward."
Navigating New Eligibility Regulations
Lin’s return follows a period of intense scrutiny regarding gender eligibility in women’s sports. The boxer famously sat out last year’s world championships after World Boxing, the sport's governing body, implemented mandatory sex testing.
However, following an appeal by the Taiwanese federation, Lin was cleared to compete in the female category by World Boxing last month. This clearance paved the way for her appearance in Mongolia and her planned participation in the upcoming Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, later this year.
Shifting Landscape for the 2028 Olympics
The context of Lin's return is framed by tightening regulations on international sports eligibility. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently updated its policies to align with a U.S. executive order led by President Donald Trump ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics.
The new IOC mandate restricts female category events exclusively to biological females, determined by a one-time mandatory gene test. This policy shift effectively excludes transgender female athletes from women's Olympic events, a significant departure from previous frameworks.
Despite the evolving regulatory environment, Lin and her team remain focused on the road to Nagoya, treating the bronze in Mongolia as the first step in a new competitive chapter.
